The Third School English Month

With the new term passing quickly, we are excited to have welcomed the Third School English Month. As is often the case, there are great varieties of activities, which are all related to English learning and application, such as English Wallpapers, English Calligraphy, English Song Singing Competition, English Speech Contest, English Riddles, English Mottos , English Broadcasting and English Corner. These activities are accessible to either teachers or students who show interest in English and are also seeking for opportunities to showcase themselves in their English learning and adopting capacity. As a matter of fact, while the English Month is under way, what amazes us is that most students are more crazy than interested in this project. For example, many more works of wallpaper are presented than expected, a great number of which seem so attractive and creative that it becomes hard to choose which are the best. What’s more, some students almost cried out when they lost the chance to compete in the final round of the English Song Singing Competition and the English Speech Contest. What a moving scene it was.

As is known to all, this project is designed to activate and motivate the students’ English learning awareness and recognition of the nature of English as a foreign language as well as to enrich and color their after-school life. There is no doubt that many students surely find there is still much room to improve in their English learning and application. After the project, the students must come to understand that it calls for a lot including patience, diligence, endurance, practice, presentation and enthusiasm to be really good at English. Personally, out-put and in-put play the same important part in English learning in spite of the fact that in-put should be larger in amount than out-put so that out-put can be more efficient and fluent. Another fact is that English learning doesn’t only focus on grammar competence including word capacity and pattern capacity but should also center on the strategies of using it as a communicative tool. Only when the students reach the understanding of the nature and function of English can they be motivated to work harder at English.

However, every coin has two sides. To be honest, there are still some weak points that cannot be ignored and should be strengthened in the following projects. First, more activities need to be added like English plays, English parties and English Story Writing. Second, the project should be more doable and popular around the school, if possible, and outside visitors are welcomed. As a result, our school can be characterized in this project and will become better known. Third, some activities are supposed to be better regularized and designed. Meanwhile, it deserves going around far and wide. Last but not the least, a proper time and proper place are invited. All these elements, I think, should be taken into consideration, for they are sure to make the project more successful.
